Eighteen

Flashes of distant muzzle fire danced in the dusk sky. I fishtailed onto the straightaway that led to the hospital and then the school. There were thuds and scrapes against the back end of the car. I ignored them, figuring I’d clipped the shrubbery outlining the road.

The car rocked after riding over a speed bump. I took issue with that because there weren’t any speed bumps on this road.

I flicked the headlights on and cursed. “Motherfucker.”

The thuds and scrapes weren’t bushes or a speed bump. Nope. Mephisto’s monstrous minions, groves of them, caused all of that ruckus. Morgan flung his door open and used it to mow a few of them down. Then the crazy bastard jumped out of the car.

I shrugged. “Fuck it.”

After a sharp cut of the wheel, I flung my door open and rocketed out. The car flipped, steamrolling the bulk of the horde. It left a crimson, pulp-filled streak in its wake. Those that remained didn’t mourn their brethren being turned into skid marks and stayed on task.

I rebounded from jumping out of a car at fifty miles an hour. Like a madman, I charged the gangly army of claws and needle-like teeth. There were several bodies of mutilated guards scattered about. Brave souls that paid the ultimate price.

A group of monsters lunged from the hedges, catching me off guard. I flung a blast of magic that sent them tumbling back through the shrubs. Their pained squeals gained their kin’s attention and drew more to me. My sword of Light Magic filled the air with the pungent odor of seared flesh. It sliced through them like they were butter.

Skywalker, baby.

Two of the fallen’s creepy minions, crinions, made me pay for my cockiness. They tackled me to the ground. My sword of light winked out on impact. I grabbed one by the throat and pressed it away. The other had me by the leg, trying to drag me away as I kicked.

There was a sound akin to a knife chopping through a soft apple. Black gore drizzled down on me. The crinion dragging me used my leg as leverage to catapult itself at my savior. Its squeal reminded me of a pig at slaughter after it vanished from view.

“Don’t just lay there,” Padia yelled.

Did she think I was just lounging around during a battle where death was very permanent?

I saved my smart-assed comments and continued fighting toward the school entrance with Padia at my side. It wasn’t until we made it there that I looked over the ugly crowd and realized my count of them was off by two or three dozen.

The handful of guards left standing were running out of ammo. Exertion was taking a toll on me, and Padia’s spear wasn’t cutting it. We were well on our way to being overrun.

We resigned to our fate and made our last stand on the front pavilion of the school. The frontline took position on the stairs. They died screaming in a wash of blood and entrails. Sommer dropped out of the sky, landing between us and guaranteed death.
